Simple Garden Maintenance Tips

by

Committed maintenance of a garden can lead to some stunning results. But this takes time and often we don’t have that kind of time, what with our busy work schedules or duties as a parent. We’re going to try and make things a little easier for you with a little checklist of tips you should follow in your daily (or at least weekly) garden maintenance.

Watering

Needless to say, you need to keep your flowerbeds, shrubbery or lawn sufficiently moist to avoid wilting. To do this successfully, at least water your garden 2 times a week- at the very most 3. When doing so, many people tend to think it doesn’t matter where the water hits as long as the plant gets its weekly dose of water. They could not be more wrong. Watering the leaves or head of the plant means you’re leaving more chance for the possibility of mold settling in. To top that, if you water with enough pressure, you could actually damage the plant so water gently. If twice a week seems like too much of a commitment since you tend to be away a lot, the simple answer to your problem is an irrigation system. Depending on the state of the soil, if it needs more or less moisture, this amount of moisture can be regulated with water control. Remember, the best time to water is early morning at around 8, so if this is too early you can once again use that water computer control system.

Lawn

Your lawn can really suffer from stunted growth in hot weather (say temperatures above 30°C). A temperature of 26°C is perfect. But you obviously can’t control the weather. You can, however, control how much your lawn feels it. At higher temperatures you’ll want to keep the grass longer (at least at 5 cm) so don’t cut it. This will ensure that the moisture in the soil doesn’t evaporate and the soil doesn’t dry out.

Weeds

A garden can be a competitive feeding ground. Weeds can seep their way into your flowerbeds if you’re not careful and they’ll compete with all your flowers, grasses and other plants for nutrients, water AND sunlight. They can take over your garden in a single season, potentially starving your plants and robbing you of all your hard work. To prevent this, plant your beds densely so you can limit the amount of space they have to grow. You can also use mulch (compost or decayed leaves) to enrich your soil while also preventing weeds from sprouting. If you already have a bad case of weeds, take care of the situation by going to the roots of it and removing them with a weeding trowel.

Critters

Critter can cause a lot of damage when it comes to your garden so you need to think of quick, effective ways to handle them. For the smaller critters, invest in some sprays and deterrents from your local store. For bigger animals, you’ll need Premier Picket Fencing to keep them away. This can be an aesthetic that uplifts your garden while protecting it at the same time.

These 4 simple tips are all you need when it comes to garden maintenance!
